33 Albany Avenue
33 Albany Avenue was the home to the Predam women from 1913 until 1958. It sits currently in a neighbourhood known as the Bloor Annex, a posh area adjacent to Yorkville and the University of Toronto. For a number of years after the disappearance of Harry Maughan (my great-grandfather) in 1908, his widow Eleanor and three sons lived next door at 37 Albany Ave. A search of Lot 85 Plan 608 North West Annex in the Toronto Land Registry Office reveals the following details about Predam ownership of 33 Albany Ave.:
Rosa Alice Predam 1867-1953
Rosa's will is registered in Toronto as GC85455. At the time she purchased the property at 33 Albany Ave. (with her sisters) in 1924 she was an accountant.
Bessie Marion Predam. 1868-1960
Bessie's will is registered in Toronto as GC118614. At the time she purchased the property at 33 Albany Ave. (with her sisters) in 1924 she was an accountant. The only point of interest in Bessie's will is a reference to her half interest in the property known as 598 St. Clair Ave. W. in Toronto. The remainder of the document details cash bequeaths to nephews Alan Edward Lawrence Maughan (my grandfather), John Howard Maughan, and Edward Harry Maughan as well as some un-related parties.
The St. Clair Avenue property consists of Lots 109 and 110 Plan 1322 Wychwood, Brakendale and Dovercourt. The property was owned by Bessie and Rosa together. After their deaths, the property is sold to their nephew (my grandfather's brother) Edward (Ted) Harry Maughan. Edward then sells the property in 1974 and takes back a mortgage which eventually goes into default after Edward's death in 1979. The property is then sold under power of sale in 1980.
Eleanor Harriet (Predam) Maughan 1870-1926
Winifred Howard Predam 1878-1959
At the time she purchased the property at 33 Albany Ave. (with her sisters) in 1924 she was a secretary.
Ruby Madeline Predam 1882-unknown
At the time she purchased the property at 33 Albany Ave. (with her sisters) in 1924 she was a secretary.
Wallaceburg News - Thursday March 2, 1911, Page 4 After an illness of several months there passed away on Saturday last at her home in East Wallaceburg, Ella Emel, beloved wife of Ches. McDougall. While the end was not unexpected, still, coming as it did, caused a deep feeling of sadness among her many friends, for she had been a resident of Wallaceburg since childhood, and by her kind and bright disposition and great musical ability she had made herself popular with old and young alike. The funeral, which was very largely attended, not only by residents of Wallaceburg, but also by many relatives an friends from out of town, was held on Tuesday , Rev. W. T. Roberts officiating, assisted by the Wallaceburg Baptist male quartet, and Mrs. John Cooper, of Chatham. After the services, the remains were taken to Chatham on a special car, accompanied by the mourners and friends, and were there interred. Besides her husband and daughter Fay, she leaves one sister, Miss Lela Whitebread, and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Whitebread, of Chatham. Many beautiful flowers were sent by sympathetic friends and St. Andrews choir of Chatham, which her sister, Miss Whitebread, is connected, sent a beautiful wreath, as did the O. E. Club, of which Mrs. McDougall was a favourite member. The family have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement. dtr of john scott mclean and eliza purser
